The Baw Baw Shire council has stressed the Trafalgar Tip, which was closed on the 8th of November last year amidst leachate concerns, is still open for household waste disposal.
Mayor of the Baw Baw Shire Councillor Diane Blackwood said in a media release yesterday confusion around the tip’s status has led to extra pressure being placed on the Lardner Transfer Station.
“[The] Lardner Transfer Station [has] been overwhelmed by excessive traffic and a huge increase of deposited waste by people who incorrectly believe that they can no longer use the Trafalgar Transfer Station,” Cr Blackwood said.
Cr Blackwood said the Trafalgar site is still open for household waste disposal.
“There’s been some confusion about the closure, which is not directed at the general public wishing to deposit household waste,” Cr Blackwood said.
“Both the transfer station and tip operate from the same premises, but only the tip, which is predominantly used by commercial operators, is closed.”
“The transfer station remains open and we encourage residents to use it for the disposal of their household waste.”
Cr Blackwood told The Warragul Citizen in November last year the Trafalgar landfill will re-open when the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is satisfied with leachate levels.
“The Council has engaged contractors to remove leachate from the site to maintain manageable levels. The Trafalgar landfill is expected to re-open when the EPA is satisfied with the management of leachate on the site. At this early stage, it is unknown when the landfill is expected to re-open. In the meantime, alternative landfills are located at 274 Hallam Road, Hampton Park and Velore Road, Kilmany,” Cr Blackwood said.
